Google PageRank (no benefit)
There’s a large debate out there whether or not Twitter helps your website or blog with Google pagerank or Google search engine listings.?.?.?
The first question that we ask, does Twitter help with Google PageRank scoring? The answer is no. Every link on Twitter uses the ‘nofollow’ attribute. This tells Google that it should not award that site link credit/juice. Thus, not helping the site receive any PageRank lift. Many bloggers try to increase their website presence on google by increasing their PageRank. Now PageRank does help with increasing your google position based on keywords (which the end user types into google to find your web page). So why would anybody use Twitter, if they care about increasing their search engine presence? The answer, anchor text.
Anchor Text (benefit)
Anchor text (and relevancy) is part of Googles algorithm. It is the text that is associated with your link back from other sites or words that surround that link back. For example, if your site is about cupcakes , then you want as many websites to link back to you with the word ‘cupcakes‘ in it or articles . Google gives your website credit for the text that is associated with the link back, whether or not it contains the ‘nofollow’ attribute. How does this tie in with Twitter? Well, there are many plug-ins available for wordpress blogs that will automatically post an article comment on Twitter and link back to your site. This provides valuable anchor text and similar content to boost your sites blog posts. This site uses a plug-in called Twittersifu. This plug-in randomly Tweets posts every 3-5 minutes and automatically takes an article title and posts it on Twitter. This eliminates the need to login to Twitter and post the article link, and automatically generates anchor text credit and relevancy for your site and particular article. Google benefit of Twitter anchor text and relevancy????? Yes!!! And you have no additional work involved.
The future of Google algorithm, Twitter Followers, and Google Buzz (positive)
Googles algorithm will constantly change to perfect searches as SEO marketers and spammers learn the tricks of the trade. One thought is that Google released Google buzz to gather data based on a voting system to support the relevancy of a website based on it’s topic of choice. Similar sites such as Twitter allow articles to be re-tweeted which certainly assigns a vote based on re-tweets or re-posts. Such data is being sold to Google by Twitter, so that Google can use this information to change its ranking algorithm. But what about Twitter followers? Certainly Google will be interested in Twitter profiles that have a higher following than ones that do not. Each Twitter profile can be followed by other Twitter members. For example our Twitter account has 625 followers as of 5/11/2010 (twitter.com/newtelecomblogs). This certainly would allow more relevancy for every posts, versus someone who only as 5 followers on their Twitter profile.
In Conclusion
Hop on the Twitter bandwagon. Receive the anchor text credit, gain followers, and stay ahead of the Google algorithm. Use Twittersifu application on a wordpress blog, and allow the api to Tweet your posts with minimal effort. Having a Twitter account with minimal effort can only help your Google search rankings.
